How do I keep my head and the rest of my body down when swinging a golf club so the ball is not topped?

This is a constant battle for me and I would especially like to hear from fellow golfers who have solved it.

That sounds like a trust issue. You have to trust that the ball will go where it is supposed to go on your swing and trust that your golfing partner will identify its position once it gets there. There is device (sort of like an arm sling) that actually restricts the head and body movement while your learning this movement.

I had that problem as well. Amazingly I found that after 4 or 5 beers I wasn’t topping the ball so much. The beers helped me to relax.

You are pulling your eyes off the ball to soon. Keep your eyes on the ball all the way through impact. You can catch up and find the ball in there air. Watch the pro’s on TV in slow motion they clear there hands and the club through the ball before they look up. Do not worry trust it and you will figure it out.

There are a lot of gadgets that are sold to try and train you for this kind of thing.

I had a club pro that took me to the range with just my 7 and a bucket and went to the grass to hit right off the ground. Then he had me address the ball and took one of the balls and placed it under my chin and told me to hold it there against my chest. had me keep my feet just an inch or 2 apart. then take a back swing only egual to shoulder height and a nice even follow through as he replaced the ball for my next swing. I hit a small bucket this way and then another without the ball but everything else the same setup.

I never look up early now, my only problem is picking up the ball on a hot hazy day after it is a ways down the fairway.

Have a freind stand infront of you and put there hand on your head while you hit range balls, do that a couple of times, and maybe it will work.
Try to get in a habit of staring at a point on the back of the ball at address and focus hard on that point, and after you hit the ball try to still be looking at the point on the ground.

keep your eye on the ball

after setting up, do not look at the ball, instead put your sights a couple of inches left of the ball towards the target line.. then swing.. this prevents you from looking up before you strike the ball.. train your mind to only look up once you see the club pass your sights, like what you do when you do a practice swing where there’s no ball in sight.. this works with chipping and putting as well..

    think down and through.

resist the urge to look at the shot.

put 2 tees on the ground about 5 inches apart.

put your ball in the middle and work on makin a divot that starts AFTER the tees

it will help you learn how to hit ball first

Rotate your hips towards the target (weight transfer) and straighten your left leg. Just pushing your right shoulder down towards the ground on your downswing.

now i can give you drills but they wont help. honestly there are only a few ways to solve this problem and i got the best answer for you. go to your locol golf store(copelands, golfsmith or wherever) and buy yourself a golf turf mat(nothing big even a 2 X 2 would work) then get yourself a net(something cheap) and when you are at home go in your garage or outside and hit whiffle golf balls into the net 10-20 minutes a day.

why does this work? your not actually trying to fix your swing thats why. you cant see where the ball is going besides the 3 feet it travels before it hits the net. so because you cant see the results of your swing and the ball flight you wont have a reason to look up.

    try it, it works.

Before you try all this stuff, try shortening your swing. I see people topping the ball when they take a long backswing which causes them to rise up. This makes it difficult to get back down to the ball.

I bought the Jim Mclean video “The Drill System For Better Golf”, moved my couch back a couple of feet and pratice some of the fundamentals right in front of the TV. The Jim McLean video helped solve a lot of issues.

Your problem isn’t so much keeping your body and head down but rather more rotating your body through the golf swing to impact and around.

Here is a decent video you may want to check out.
