Do I need to pay for an opponent’s racquet if I hit it and chip the paint?

I was playing doubles racquetball and reached for a shot (that I missed) and ended up hitting my opponent’s two week old $200 racquet with my own racquet. I took the racquet to a racquet store and the owner said the frame is not cracked, the integrity of the racquet is not compromised, and that only the surface paint is chipped off (about half the size of a dime). The opponent contends that I owe him a new racquet. This can be me taking this racquet and buying him a new one. What do you think? Does this warrant him getting a new racquet?

no. even if you broke it.
    you weren’t using it.
    It happened during competition.
I have had hockey and lacrosse sticks break on me during games and I don’t say buy me a new one.
